Bobbi Brown – Makeup Manual

Bobbi Brown – Makeup Manual

If anyone needs help with makeup application, it’s me.

Let’s be honest ladies, I can smack talk with the best of them but applying liquid eyeliner is about as enjoyable for me as my annual lady parts check up. Not only do I lack the skills to apply makeup but I just don’t know where to start.

Which is where Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual comes in. I got this as part of the Melbourne Beauty Blogger Event and was instantly thrilled. I like Bobbi’s no nonsense style – which appeals to a no nonsense person like myself – and I was eager to try the step by step instructions.

Packaging

This comes as a hefty hardback.  This is heavy.  I reckon it could pin my kids down on the floor if I wanted it to.  That’s not such a bad idea really.
Product

I can’t tell you how much I use this book.  It’s incredible.  From creating a smoky eye, to applying my foundation, to applying bronzer without looking like an Oompa Loompa… this book is a Godsend.

It even goes through things like maintaining a good diet and how – if you are looking to be a professional makeup artist – to promote yourself and get work. If you want an easy daytime look, this book has it.  If you want a bridal look, this book has it.  If you want a special occasion look, this book has it.  If you’re old like me and need to ‘enhance’ a multitude of sins, this book will do it without you looking Baby Jane.

I know Bobbi’s no nonsense style doesn’t appeal to everyone.  But, for me, I just want clear instructions and that is precisely what I get with this book.  And, you know, it’s transformed my makeup routine from one of stress and uncertainty to one of ‘You know, I’m going to try this’.  It’s weird and goofy to say, but this book gives me confidence and that is half the battle for me.

Still don’t believe me?  I have photo proof of how good this book is.  Don’t blame me if you want this book at the end of it.

The section on nutrition is great but, if I were presented with this to eat, my first question would be ‘That’s great. Now, where’s my steak?’

The foundation application section is amazing.  The hints and tricks on how to get that flawless look without piling on product is fantastic.

The smoky eye tutorial is gloriously in-depth.  You won’t fail with this one.

The special occasion makeup appeals because it talks about going from day to night.  So no need to wash and re-apply.  Just work with what you have already, leaving more time for canapes and cocktails!

The section for older ladies is phenomenal, and look at the gorgeous model.  She is also on posters at the Bobbi Brown counters here in Australia.  I love how you can still see her freckles and wrinkles, but that you also see her beautiful brown eyes and luscious lips.  This book is also about celebrating what you have and not hiding the bad stuff.

Finally, there is a section on booking work. I’m not familiar with how the makeup artist world works but the advice given seems like good common sense and a great guide for a beginner.

Price

As this was given to me, I’m not sure how much it is in Australia.  In the US, you can pick this up for around $25.  Worth the price of admission ladies.

Would I repurchase?

It’s unlikely I will need to repurchase but I would recommend this for anyone who wants to learn how to apply makeup.  From the pictures to the advice to the tips and tricks…. this book has something for everyone.  I highly recommend it for anyone who lacks confidence and/or skill, or someone who wants to develop their capabilities. There really is something for everyone with this little beauty.

I have this book. I picked it up at the Sydney IMATS last year. It was about $60AUD, and still a steal as far as I am concerned. I love the book!
